TOWN VERSUS COUNTRY
CRICKET MATCH AT WELLINGTON MODERATE SCORING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Weak batting marked the opening day’s play in the annual Town v. Country cricket match at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, yesterday. Though the weather was fine, the wicket was on the soft side and the ball came through at varying paces. Bowlers seized their opportunity, with the result that both teams fell for small scores. The Town eleven had first strike and were scoring promisingly, with 83 for three wickets, but here T. L. Pritchard came on for his second turn with the ball and completely altered the complexion of the innings by taking four wickets for 6 runs, and wound up a fine bowling performance by ending up with six wickets for 62 runs off 13.6 overs. . J. A. Ongley was top scorer for the Town side with 36 not out, and Rice, Hepburn, and Ell reached the twenties, but the remainder of the batsmen made a feeble showing against the Country attack. The total reached only 152. Modest as was the Town total, it looked as if the Country eleven would not reach it. Eight wickets were down for 118. when a courageous stand by Murchinson and Pritchard carried the score to 161, and enabled Country to lead Town by nine runs on the first innings. McVicar made 49, J. Murchison 28 not out. and Pritchard 19.
