WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

UPPER PLAIN BIRTHDAY. A most enjoyable evening was held recently in the Kaituna Hall when the Upper Plain Women’s Institute held their third birthday dance. Visitors were present from the various neighbouring institutes. During the evening, little Betty Dagg delighted the visitors with an operatic dance, while the members of the Upper Plain Drama Circle staged an amusing play, entitled “A World Without Men,” produced by Miss E. Dawson. The cast was as follows: — Miss Wisper, Miss Trass; Madame Pavell, Miss Wilson; Mrs Robinson, Miss Edwards; Mrs Smith, Miss Evans; Mrs Jones, Miss Dawson; Mrs Brown. Mrs G. Dagg. After supper, which was served by the committee ladies, Mrs Dagg, president, called on the secretary to light the three candles on the birthday cake. The treasurer, Mrs Thomas, was asked to blow them out and Mrs Tankersley to cut the cake, which was made by Mrs Dagg. The prizes for the year’s competitions were then presented by the president to Mrs Laing (first for the best bloom) and to Mrs W. Taplin (points prize). Mrs Dagg presented the secretary and treasurer with small gifts in appreciation of the work they had carried out during the year. Miss Dawson, producer of the play, was asked to accept a beautiful powder crystal bowl and posy from the members of the Drama Circle. Posies were presented to the visitors of the surrounding institutes; to Mrs Dagg who represented the Towns Women’s Guild, and to Mrs W. G. Laing who had helped to make the evening such a success. Mrs Dagg was presented with a beautiful bouquet by the secretary from the fellow members who in the course of a neat speech, thanked Mrs Dagg for the help and assistance given during the year. Mrs Dagg suitably replied. Dancing was continued on until a late hour. Mr H. W. Dagg capably carried out the duties of M.C. Thanks were extended to all those who had helped to make the function a success, and to the musicians who supplied splendid music. A most enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem.
