CARTERTON BOROUGH

COUNCILLORS MEET LAST NIGHT’S BUSINESS.-(“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. The Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) presided and there were also present Councillors E. McKenzie, H. Mortenson, L. M. Clark, C. Stevens, C. J. De Lacey, Miss O. Wolters. R. A. Copeland. J. Udy and the Town Clerk (Mr P. A. Cole). An apology for absence was received from 'Cr W. A. Hart. Mr H. Tyndall. Director of Housing Construction, wrote regarding kerbing and channelling and notifying that there was no authority whereby public money may be expended in carrying out work on any road or street. Tnis was in regard to channelling and kerbing in Kent Street, opposite the Government" houses. The secretary of the Carterton Municipal Silver Band wrote asking that windows be installed in the south end of the bandroom, and also one in the supper room. —After discussion it was decided that the application could not be entertained at present. The Commissioner of Transport wrote asking that the section from the borough boundary to a point south of the Royal Oak Hotel be derestricted as far as the speed of motor vehicles was concerned. The request was agreed to. Messrs Hill and Hughes wrote enclosing the transfer with plan of subdivision of a section to the Carterton Bowling Club and asking that the same be endorsed. —Agreed to.

The secretary of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote regarding the control of the fire brigade by the council and notifying that brigade members had passed a resolution in favour of the same. The council agreed to accede to the request. . The hon secretary National Committee of Swimming and Life Saving requested assistance to the appeal and asked for co-Operation of council in the matter. —It was decided to assist by giving the use of the Carterton baths for the ( purpose of encouraging the society to teach people to swim.

A letter was received from the District Inspector of Factories notifying that he was in receipt of a complaint from the secretary of a union that a man had been dismissed from the borough employ for refusing to load a barrel of tar on to a wagon.—lt was resolved that Ihe clerk reply to the effect that the person in question had been dismissed for insubordination. The Commissioner of Transport wrote regarding possible accidents during Christmas and New Year, and asking that an organisation be set up to coordinate activities in the distrioution of road safety materials, etc. —The clerk was authorised to reply that the council would assist in the matter.

A letter was received from the Minister of Transport (the Hon R. Semple) relative to town carrying services, and notifying that representations had been made by town carriers that the number of town carrying licences were being increased in many towns to a level which made it impossible for those engaged to secure a reasonable standard of living.—The letter was received. Messrs Hart and Tucker forwarded a memorandum of transfer from the Wairarapa Electric Power Board to the Women's Division of rhe N.Z. Farmers’ Union and asked the council to consent' to the transfer. —This was agreed to.' The Carterton Amateur Swimming Club wrote asking to be allowed to use the baths in the evenings and on Sunday afternoons for the current season. —It was resolved that the request be not granted. The receipts since last meeting amounted to £BB4 9s lOd, and accounts amounting to £993 17s 3d were passed for payment. A comprehensive report was submitted by the borough overseer (Mr N. A. Rush), and adopted. The Works Committee’s report was read and approved. Among the matters decided upon were two applications to be connected with the borough water servic.e which were agreed to. A clean-up week prior to Christmas was decided upon. The long grass in all streets is to be cut down by contract. The water mains in the borough are to be cleaned by means of fire hydrants as opportunity offered. The gas manager’s report stated: — Forty tons of coal had been carbonised during October for a gross return of 513,000 c.f. per ton. Consumers’ meters accounted for 482,600 c.f.; 8600 c.f. was used at the gas works, and 800 c.f. at the borough office. During the month three new and one secondhand gas cooker had been installed. Four faulty meters had been changed, and 16 consumers’ requirements attende'd to. Painting at the works has been completed. The new exhauster was shipped from London in the S.S. Cumberland. The usual routine work had been> carried out at the works. The plant was working very satisfactorily. It was resolved to, call for applications for the position of dog registrar at the same remuneration as last year. It was resolved that the next monthly meeting of the council be held on Tuesday, December 20.
