SWIMMING CLUB
r--OPENING OF THE SEASON. CONTESTS HELD IN THE RAIN. Last evening the Masterton Swimming Club opened its 1938-39 season with a series of competitions 'in the Dixon Street Baths.' In spite of threatening weather there was a very encouraging attendance of both the public and competitors, and this augurs well for the success of the season. Unfortunately heavy rain set in towards the end of the programme, but the officials carried on while the swimmers ignored the conditions (They were wet, anyway), and the public offered encouragement from the shelter of the boxes. The following were the results: — Girls, 25 yards handicap —B. Mayhew (7sec), 1; M. Pauling (4sec), 2; L. Ross (6sec), 3. Also started, N. Stains (4sec) and A. Stains (scr). Time, 28 3-5 sec. Boys, 25 yards handicap. —R. Major (4sec), 1; B. Blackwood (3sec), 2; E. Rollings (ssecs), 3. Also started, R. Slater (4sec), G. Whyborn (scr), I. Blackwood (Bsec), E. Welch (4sec), B. Beacroft (4sec), D. Stewart (Bsec). Time,' 26sec.
Men’s, 50 yards Breaststroke —N. Faulknor (lsec), 1; F. Milne (scr), 2; D. Cairns (Bsec), 3. Time, 40 4-ssec. Ladies’ 25 /yards Handicap—Miss D. Heaven (3sec), 1; Miss N. Yates (scr), 2; Miss B. Welch (2sec), 3. Time, 20 sec.
Men’s 25 yards scratch race.—D. O’Connor, 1; L. Maguire, 2; A. Hart, 3. Time, 14 3-ssec. Men’s 50 yards handicap, first heat. — L. Maguire (scr), 1; D. Stewart (ssec), 2; V. McKeague (ssec), 3. Time, 31 2|5 sec.
Second heat. —T. Burns (Bsec), 1; P. Fox (scr), 2; D. Cairns (7sec), 3. Time 37sec.
Final. —T. Burns (Bsec), 1; D. Stewart (ssec), 2; D. Cairns (7sec), 3. Time, 38 2-ssec.
Boys’ Dive —E. Rollings and R. Major equal, 20.5 points 1; J. Blackwood, 16 points, 3. Girls’ Dive—N. Stains, 17.5 points, 1; M. Simonsen, 13 points, 2; L. Ross, 11.5 points, 3. Men’s Dive—V. McKeague, 24 points, 15; L. Maguire, 22 points, 2; F. Milne, 18 points, 3. It is the intention of the club to conduct classes in life-saving this season and those desiring instruction should hand in their names to the secretary immediately. ,
