WAIRARAPA SUB-CENTRE

REPORT OF PAST SEASON’S ACTIVITIES SOME NOTABLE VISITORS The annual report of the Wairarapa Sub-centre of the Amateur Athletic Association for the past season, to be presented at the annual meeting on Thursday evening next, states: “The activities of the past season call for some comment. During the year we had some outstanding visitors, namely A. L. Fitch and the Trinidad athletes (representing the West Indies at the British Empire Games). These athletes appeared at the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club’s sports on Anniversary Day, January 22. The lack of public interest was very disappointing. Later in the season, Mr A. L. Fitch visited Masterton for coaching purposes, and some interesting meetings were arranged for athletes. Each section was catered for, flat and field events and harrier and school pupils. The time at Mr Fitch’s disposal was all too short to have the effect we desired, but under the circumstances a great deal of good work was accomplished, and we sincerely hope to have Mr Fitch with us again in the near future. Both Harrier Club:, had a successful season. The Masterton A.A. Club was again successful in winning the Country Club’s Championship shield by a large margin of points. The Provincial championship team, under the able and efficient management of Mr A. Wyeth, performed creditably. Congratulations are extended to C. Hausman on his performances in the Provincial and New Zealand Championships. The introduction of the Inter-House competition should do much to further the cause of amateur athletics in the Wairarapa. It is pleasing to note the remarkable progress made by the Eketahuna A.A. club. We also wish to congratulate the Mangatainoka A.A. club on its progress and on the ground imprqvements effected. We regret that owing to wet weather the Nireaha Amateur Athletic Club- and Caledonian Society’s meeting were unable to be held. The sub-centre deeply regrets the death of Mr J. Walker, a former president, whose passing is a severe loss to amateur athletics in the Wairarapa.” The report is signed by the hon. secretary, Mr J. V. Dolan.
