WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION’S COMPETITIONS OPENING GAMES OF SEASON’S EVENTS. MASTERTON AND MEMORIAL WIN IN A GRADE. The Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association's competition games were commenced on Saturday, when matches were played in al] grades. Ideal weather conditions prevailed. In the Gawith Shield contest Masterton had a comfortable win over Martinborough by 18 matches to 6. Martinborough won the Shield last season. In the other shield match, played at the Memorial courts, Memorial Park defeated Carterton by 15 matches to 9. A GRADE. SHIELD HOLDERS DEFEATED. Playing on the Masterton’courts, the Masterton A grade team had no great difficulty in accounting for Martinborough, winners of the Gawith Shield last year. MEMORIAL BEAT CARTERTON A “B” grade match between Carterton and Memorial was played on the Carterton courts on Saturday and resulted in a decisive victory for Masterton by 20 matches to 4 or 190 games to 99.
