BOROUGH AFFAIRS
MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. SPACE AT CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION. : The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, held last night. Others present were: Councillors Trevor Beetham. J. Ninnes, A. T. Jackson, G. W. Morice, H. E. Gardner, R. Russell. G. D. Wilson. W. Kemp. W. H. Judd. A. D. Low and W. White. The Horticultural Society wrote thanking the council for remitting portion of the rent owing for the hire of the halls last year. The Beautifying Society advised that Messrs E. W. Pay ton and L. Robinson had been appointed co-opted members of the Park Committee. The action of the chairman of the Park Committee, Councillor Wilson, in granting the Park Custodian permission to act as one of the three judges appointed by the Horticultural Society for the judging of the garden competition was endorsed. . The Lansdowne Croquet Club wrote asking if it was possible to obtain a lease of a section of land between the bridges for 10 years with right of renewal and at what rental per annum. It was decided to advise the club that in view of the restrictions imposed on local bodies under provisions of the Leasing Act, the council could not grant a lease but was prepared to grant the club a yearly tenancy at a rental of £1 Is. Councillor Gardner and the Park Custodian were appointed to attend the conference of chairmen of parks and reserves superintendents to be held at New Plymouth in the New Year. In each case the council is to bear expenses up to £lO. Miss H. Brenkley was given permission to teach swimming in the C and A Baths, subject to her‘making suitable arrangements regarding hours with the custodian. It was decided to thank Mr J. Cruickshank for his letter offering no objection to the section owned by the Jean’s Estate being used as a parking area on sale and fair days. The chairman of the Library Committee, Councillor Kemp, was appointed to represent the council at the conference of the New Zealand Library Association, to be held in Palmerston North next February. A letter was received from the Wairarapa Automobile Association asking that in cases where street improvements were carried out, signboards be erected in addition to the usual lights. It was decided to advise the association that it was the usual practice of the council to put into effect the safeguards suggested by it. The council decided that it had no comment to make on a proposal by the Transport Department to use a special traffic sign at intersections. At its last meeting, the council decided to restrict the stopping places in Queen Street of the Masterton-Carter - ton buses. As the result of a request by solicitors representing the bus firm, the council has agreed to alter the stopping places on the outward journey to outside the Bank of New Zealand and just past the Knox Church corner. The Centennial Exhibition Company wrote asking' to be informed what features of the Wairarapa zone the council would like exhibited in the Provincial Court. ,It was resolved to ask the company what amount of space was set aside for a Wairarapa display. A letter was received from the Beautifying Society offering to cooperate with the council in any town planning scheme that might be formulated. It was decided to thank the society for its offer, Mr Jordan remarking: “We will give them an opportunity before long, I hope.” It was resolved to purchase 700 second hand books, at lOd each, under offer to the Library by an Auckland firm.
