BRITISH MUSIC SOCIETY

RECITAL BY PAUL SCHRAMM. Last evening Paul Schramm, the famous German musician, visited Masterton under the auspices of the British Music Society. In a ■ delightful speech Mrs T. Jordan (president) introduced Mr Schramm. The musician replied in a humorous vein, explaining that he was touring New Zealand and visiting all towns that supported a British Music Society, large or small. Before each item Mr Schramm, in a versatilemanner, explained the meaning of each composition and told anecdotes about the various musicians or composers. Mr Schramm is a most charming and finished musician and a small but appreciative audience spontaneously applauded each beautifully rendered i|em. After the recital the committee and staff entertained Mr Schramm at supper.

The programme was as follows: — Organ concerto in D minor (W. F. Bach); Sonata in E flat major op. 31 No. 3, Allegro-Scherzo-Menuetto—Presto con fuoco (Beethoven); pianoforte studies (Schumann); “Poissons d’or” (Debussy), “Les son? et les parfums tournent dans Fair du soir” (Debussy); “Marche Grotesque” from the opera, “The Love of the Three Oranges” (Prokofiew); Nocturne in F sharp major (Chopin); Waltz (Chopin); Chambrc-phantasy over Carmen (Busoni).
