COUNTY AFFAIRS
MEETING OF FEATHERSTON COUNCIL. COTTAGES FOR ROADMEN. (“Times-Age” Special.) At yesterday’s meeting of the Featherston County Council the chairman, Mr A. iB. Martin, was appointed to represent the council on the Wairarapa Patriotic Association in place of the late Hon A. D. McLeod.
An employee of the council at Western Lake wrote stating th?t for several years he had been living in r roadside hut and asking the council to provide him with a cottage similar to that provided for other members of the permanent county staff. Mr Martin said it was a reasonable lequest. The question of housing for the workmen was very unsatisfactory and needed overhauling.
Othe r councillors agreed and Councillor Matthews said: “As far as old employees are concerned let us give them a fair deal.” It was decided that the Clerk ascertain from the Government what financial assistance would be forthcoming for the ejection of cottages for county employees. Mr B. Roberts, M.P., wrote stating that the matter of flood water on Mr Rendle’s property would receive immediate attention. The results of the inquiry would be forwarded to the council.
The question of providing 'he Centennial Exhibition Committee with particulars of historical events and scenic attractions in the district was left in the hands of the Clerk.
The ranger reported having dealt with 27 head of stock during October. Fees collected amounted to £1 6s. Mr M. McLeod wrote asking for permission to erect a cattle-stop on ihe boundary of his property and the McDougall Estate. It would be the last cattle-stop on the Haurangi Road. It was decided to submit the plans of the cattle-stop to the Public Works Department for approval. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote stating that on account of the heavy commitments the Main Highways Board was unable to approve any general increase in the present main highway mileage. As a result applications by the council would have to be held over until the next annual review.
The treasurer reported that receipts since last meeting amounted to £4133 6s Id. The bank credit balance stood at £4883 12s 6d. Accounts amounting to £5635 0s lid were passed. The Wellington Education Board wrote agreeing to the removal of the existing fence line outside the school on Fabian’s Road. The board would also pay the cost of any materials required for the erection of a new fence. Road improvement works are being carried out on Fabian’s Road. In his report for the past six months ♦he Health Inspector stated that five cases of notifiable infectious disease were notified during the period. Viewed from that angle, it could be said that the general health of the county could be considered good.
