STATE THEATRE

“MOTHER CAREY’S CHICKENS.” There are some families in the world who never seem to find a haven anywhere, and are continually moving on to fresh fields. Sqch a family is the Careys, principal actors in "Mother Carey’s Chickens,” the attraction for tonight at the State Theatre, and the manner in which they ultimately find a permanent home forms thq story of the film. These people are always fighting circumstance. The first blow they suffer is the death of their father, a naval captain who is killed in the Spanish-American War. Then the two daughters both fall in love with tfie saipe man and, when impetuous Catherine succeeds in ousting practical Nancy, unhappiness results. Faced with the problem of eking out an existence the Careys set to and renovate a disused N.ew Zealand; home to establish a boarding-house. After settling down in their country residence, realising their ambition of securing a permanent home, and becoming the firm favourites of the neighbourhood, the Careys’, plans are wrecked when the house is sold over their heads. The novel method adopted to eject the new owners, with the aid of the former owner’s son, who is recruited to the family’s side and falls in love with Nancy, ■is not only highly humorous but provides, a most pleasing conclusion. Those in the main roles are Ann Shirley, Ruby Keeler, Ralph Morgan, Walter Brennan, Fay Bainter, and Frank Albertson. The supporting programme includes a feature on golf and a coloured cartoon, Donald Duck in Walt Disney’s “Polar Trappers.”
