COSY THEATRE

"OH SUSSANA.” The programme at the Cosy Theatre tonight is headed by Gene Autry in “Oh Susanna.” Gene Autry, is an evening’s entertainment himself. So is Smiley Burnette, his pal, neighbour and acting contemporary. But. when you have these two plus six Light Crust Doughboys, any story is. an assured, success. Not that “Oh Susanna” lacks for plot, colour, and character interest. The story, which has to do with a bad man masquerading as a ’ radio star at a Dude ranch, is probably Autry’s best production to date. Frances Grant, who did a small part in “Red River Valley,” plays opposite Autry. Among supporting players are Ed Piel Senr., Fred Burns, Roger Grey, Snowflake, Roscoe Gerall, Ken Cooper and Alfred James. The Light Crust Doughboys comprise a radio sextette that for several years have entertained air audiences of America.

What happens to human nature, when- men and women are cut off from all contact with civilisation without a minute’s warning and lost on an uncharted island? That was the question which Universal- set out to answer in dramatic terms when the studio began work on “Sinners In Paradise,” the spectacular film of elemental conflict which will be the second attraction at the Cosy Theatre with Madge Evans, John Boles and Bruce Cabot in the principal roles. Director Whale chose Madge Evans for the wife turn-, ed nurse. John- Boles was his selection for the doctpr. Willie Fung, noted Oriental actor was his nomination for the doctor’s China boy. Charlotte Wynters for the millionairess, Gene Lockhart for the politician, Nana Bryant for the mother, and' Milburn Stone and Morgan Conway for the gun merchants were Whale’s other selections.
