NATIONAL WELFARE
MEETING OF WOMEN’S LEAGUE. HOSPITAL & SOCIAL WORK. . The monthly meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League was held on Friday at the Midland Hotel. Those present were Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames R. C. Drummond, S. J. Munn, A. W. McKenzie, F. Daniell, H. E. Pither, F. Garland, A. Henderson, S. Coradine, E. J. Coleman, R. Whyborn and A. Kilgour, Misses Wilson and M. Boddington. Apologies for absence were.received from Mesdames T. Jordan, H. P. Harrison, T. F. Watson, G. G. Tolhurst, H. Glen and S. Fletcher.
Mrs Tolhurst reported that two visits had been paid to the hospital during October. Flowers, fruit and reading matter were distributed. The usual tea was given on each visit to No. 6 ward. Miss Barnnitt wrote thanking the members of the league for their kindness to the patients during her term as matron, also for the kind thought in sponsoring the gift presented to her by the children of the hospital. Mrs Pither moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Whyborn and her helpers in connection with the supper cloth presented to the matron. The motion was carried by acclamation. Mesdames Fletcher and Drummond were appointed to decorate the cenotaph on Armistice Day, November 11. Visitors to the hospital for November 15 are Mesdames Drummond, Coradine and Kilgour; November 29, left to the convenor to arrange. Mrs Pither was appointed delegate to the Locality Committee of the PanPacific Women’s Association.
Mrs Pither reported that four prizes came to Masterton from the art union for the Blind Institute.
Anyone who wished to order goods as Christmas gifts from the Blind Institute should give their orders to Mrs Pither during November to ensure early delivery. Mrs A. W. McKenzie reported one case attended to in social welfare work during October, blankets and groceries having been delivered to this case. Mrs Munn reported on a visit paid to Buchanan Home during October. Musical items were rendered by Mesdames Morton and Alexander, and dances in costume were given by little Beulah Hirst. The items were much enjoyed by the inmates. Posies, sweets and afternoon tea were dispensed to all the old folk by the visitors. Before leaving the wards, Matron Higginson thanked the league and called for three cheers which was given by the inmates.
The Christmas visit will be paid about December 8, subject to the approval of the Matron. The problem of immigration was discussed and on the motion of Mrs Coleman, seconded by Miss Kummer, it was decided to leave the matter in abeyance until the annual meeting. Miss Kummer proposed, seconded by Mrs F. Daniell, that each member help towards the furnishing of the Rest Room by voluntarily giving Is. AHI members attending the meeting willingly desponded. Thanks are due to Mr and Mrs J. Watson for 550 bags of sweets for the old folks of Buchanan Home and to Mrs Knutson for papers for the hospital.
