EKETAHUNA

NTREAIIA WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Nireaha Women’s Institute Mrs Petersen presided over a very fair attendance of members. ' Mrs Stewart gave a detailed report on the Council meeting held in Eketahuna, while Mrs Mill’s talk on Hamilton was most interesting. It has been decided to form a garden circle and to join the potato competition.

A fishing game arranged by Mrs Mills was won by Mrs W. Drysdale. There were numerous entries for all competitions and some very fine work was displayed. The results were:— Shoulder spray and buttonhole: Mrs Thomasen 1, Mrs Wilkin 2, Mesdames Stewart and Cadwallader 3. Bloom: Mrs Blewett 1, Mrs Mills 2, Mesdames Peterson, Mills, Thomason and Wilkin 3. Madeira cake: Mesdames Blewett, Hanson, Wilkin and Stewart 1, Mesdames O’Neil and Thomason 2. (Mrs Blewett drew first prize). The hostesses, Mesdames Blewett and Thomason served a very dainty afternoon tea, after which the singing of the' National Anthem brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. Personal. Mrs Keats, of Newman Road, has Mrs J. A. Martin, of Hastings, as her guest. Mr T. Bedding is reported to be seriously ill at Paraparaumu. Mr George Turner, who was injured by a fall of earth at the Ma.kuri Gorge on September 6. is making good progress towards recovery. He is still an inmate of the Wellington hospital, and is expected to be there for another two months. Mrs Marenzi is on a visit to Paraparaumu. Mrs W. O. Twentyman, of Hukanui. is making a splendid recovery from her recent illness. Main Highway Work. The Eketahuna County engineer reported as follow to the monthly meeting of the council concerning No 62 Main Highway.—The tender of Messrs Earthworks, Ltd, for the reconstruction of the Tawataia section was approved by the Main Highways Board, and the contractors expect to make a start about the middle of the month. Messrs Reid Bros have made good progress with the Pleckville bridge. The western pier and abutment have been completed and the excavation for the eastern pier is complete. Very satisfactory foundations have been obtained. The usual maintenance work has been carried out and the small slips have all been shifted. Some of the larger slips are being left till they dry out, so that they can be shifted by machine. In connection with No 1 63 Main Highway Mr W. G. Macky reported as follows: The surface of the road is in very fair order throughout, and the formation has been cleaned up over the greater portion of the length. The narrow filling on Saunder’s Flat has been widened. A high level 24in pipe will be put in near the junction of Leach’s road to take flood waters when the main stream is in flood. This should eliminate.most of the. scouring that is taking place at the present time. Those sections which were sinking on the outside of the formation have been built up and most of the breakaways have been attended to.

Weather Delays Road Work. The Parkville-Central, South No 3. and Hare’s Roads are being graded preparatory to being patched with crushed metal. The weather, however, has delayed this work too. Morgan's Road has been patched. A small wooden culvert requires replacement. A large box culvert in the Parkvale Central Road has reached 'the end of its useful life' and Will have to be replaced this summer. A pipe culvert on Dougheryt’s Road is too small and will have to be increased in capacity. No extensive damage seems to have occurred to groynes, etc, on the Mangatainoka River during the recent rains. Movement of Slip Arrested. On the Castle Hill Road, the big slip at Price's settled down a little more, but the major movement has been arrested and the position should be still further improved when the second groyne is put in, reported Mr Macky to the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council. Wingate’s Road formation is being tidied up and most of the subsidences have settled down, though this last rain may set them moving again. During the month a considerable quantity of limestone was pul on to the Pori and it is now in much better condition. The lower end of Saunders’ Road was heavily graded and patched with river shingle ex the Tiraumea. All the slips have been cleared back to enable a track to be put through with the exception of one near Owendale. Work was to have been started on this one on Wednesday. The big slip on the Waihoki Valley Road will again have to be widened. Timber is on order for the re-decking of the second truss bridge on this road.
