MAHUNGA CLUB CLOSES
SEASON.
PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES.
Members, friends and visitors gathered on Saturday afternoon to participate in the closing day for the season of the Mahunga Golf Club. A very pleasant mixed fourball was played, after which all present were the guests of the president, Mr G. H. Perry, at afternoon tea and the piesentation of trophies won during the season followed.
Before calling on Mr Perry to present the trophies Mr J. G. McFarlane, on behalf of ‘he club, conveyed a welcome to Mrs and Mr J. Robertson. M.P.. and stated that it was gratifying to have Masterton's member come along to the links and he assured him of the members’ appreciation. On behalf of Mrs Robertson and himself, Mr Robertson thanked the club for their kind invitation to be present. He always thought Mahunga was a very pleasant place to come to. He had only taker, an academic interest In the game—for some reason he had not found time for an active interest —he had left this to Mrs Robertson. Should he eve-’ find the time to take on the game he would certainly join the club. He congratulated the club on the magnificent and wonderful display of trophies, an indication of the club’s standing in the field of sport. Mr McFarlane apologised for the absence of the club’s patron Mr T. Jordan, who was away in Wellington and for Mrs Jordan, who had a previous engagement.
The club’s captain, Mr I. I. McGregor, who was at present in England, had asked him to convey his best wishes to members. He trusted that (he season had been an enjoyable one and he was looking forward to meeting members once again before play opened next season. The club was fortunate in having Mr Perry as president, said Mr McFarlane, and although members did rot see him often at the links he could assure him they had a very warm feeling for him and it was a pleasure to have him. present. Members had thoroughly enjoyed being his guests at afternoon tea and all were sorry that Mrs Perry could not be with him.
Mr Perry congratulated the club on the improvements effected during :he past season He particularly referred to the extension of the clubhouse and the drainage operations. The fairways were in excellent order and now that the club had been fortunate in gaining a long extension of its lease there was no reason at all why next reason should not be the best year in the club’s history. Referring to the natural splendour of the situation, Mr Perry said there was no reason why Mahunga should not make the links a bird sanctuary. The native bush was very beautiful and he expressed the wish that the committee would do everything possible to ensure its protection. • The following trophies were then presented by Mr Perry: —Men’s senior championship (G. H. Perry Challenge Cup and miniature), A. E. Friend; runner-up, lan McFarlane; intermediate championship (J. E. Elliott Challenge Cup and miniature), L. M. Roach; runner-up, R. J. Smith; junior championship challenge cup, E. Jenkins; runner-up, W. N. A. Hosking; net aggregate cup (Mr F. R. Evans trophy), V. E. captain’s trophy, D. A. Hunn; McGregor trophy (for best reduced handicap), W. Johansen; ladies’ committee trophy. lan McFarlane. Ladies’ trophies: Senior championship (challenge fruit dish), Mrs A. H. Ward; runner-up, Miss P. Madsen; junior championship (L. S. Nicol Cup and miniature), Miss N. Smith; runner-up, Miss M. Diggins; captain’s trophy (crystal vase), Mrs A. H. Ward; net aggregate' (Seymour Gilding challenge cup), Mrs A. H. Ward; flag competition (crystal powder bowl), Mrs L. M. Roach; L.G.U. bronze medal, Miss I. Rudd; Mills Cup, Mrs A. Hi Ward.
The closing day mixed fourball competition resulted in a win for Mrs Riddell and Mr J. G. McFarlane. MASTERTON CLUB. NET AGGREGATE RESULTS. The results of the net aggregate competition played by members of the Masterton Golf Club are as follow: — Senior: F. J. Miller 221, T. W. Horton 225, E. Henderson 226, G, Falloon 227, F. B. Tatham 228, G. Grylls 229, R. G. Mackie 230. Junior: R. E. G. Lee 223, N. H. Prior 223, F. N. Cunningham 228. A medal competition resulted: — Senior: E. Henderson 69, R. G. Mackie 70, T. W. Horton 73. Junior: N. H. Prior 76. RIVERSIDE GOLF CLOSING OF THE SEASON i About seventy members and friends attended the closing of the Riverside Golf Club’s season on Saturday, when several competitions were decided and the presentation of trophies won during the season took place. Afternoon tea was supplied by the lady members of the club. The competitions resulted as follow: Mixed fourball, Miss L. Wells and D Wellington; driving, ladies, Miss K. Dixon; men, M. Finlayson; approach ladies, Miss Samson; men, G. Murdoch: putting, ladies, Miss R. G. Bradley: men, B. Summers. The president, Mr G. F. Candy, presented the trophies won during the season. A list of the trophies has already been published. CHALLENGE MATCH. LOCKE BEATS GUY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, October 30.
In his first game since his illness the visiting South African golfer, A. D. Locke, met and' beat the Gisborne professional, A. E. Guy, this afternoon, 2 up, in a challenge match on the Awapuni course. The visitor's card was 75, showing that he has not fully recovered. Locke and his manager, Mr Hines, left after the match for Morere. They will travel to Hastings tomorrow morning. OTAGO CLUB CHAMPION. DUNEDIN, October 29. In the final of the Otago Golf Club's championship, T, C. Tyrrell, title-hold-er, beat W. G. Wight, 2 and 1.
