DEATH OF MR W. J. FEAST.

The death occurred at an early hour this morning of Mr Walter James Feast, a well known farmer of Ahikouka, at the age of 70 years. The late Mr Feast took a keen and active interest in rifle shooting and golf. He was patron of the Greytown Rifle Club and the Greytown Golf Club. Mrs Feast died some years ago, and he leaves .three sons (Messrs J. C. Feast, H. W. Feast and H. R. Feast) and one daughter (Mrs Horner). The late Mr Feast was a member of the Masterton-Opaki Rifle Club on one occasion when it won the New Zealand teams championship at Trentham. He was a foundation member of the Greytown Rifle Club and one of the promoters of the Ahikouka River Board, of which body he had been chairman for some time. He was also a director of the Greytown Dairy Company. In his younger days he was a prominent cricketer having played for years for the Greytown Club. The funeral will leave the residence, Ahikouka, on Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o’clock for the Featherston Cemetery. Old Resident Passes Away. The death took place at the Greytown Hospital on Saturday of Mrs Jafiet Mitcheß, widow of the late Alex. Mitchell, of Battersea. Mrs Mitchell was a- daughter of the late Mr John Hodge Senr., and a sister of Mr John Hodge who died at Greytown a few weeks ago. Although she had been an invalid for many years Mrs Mitchell possessed a happy disposition. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs L. J. Thompson, of Morison’s Bush. The funeral took place at Greytown today. Another Sniper. The Greytown Defence Rifle Club nominated two of its members for the Defence Sniper Platoon at its annual meeting. At the shoot on Saturday Raymond Ingley was nominated as the third member. Personal. Messrs J. and B. Kiernan will leave this week for Dunedin. Mr B. Kiernan will be a competitor in the N.Z. Golf Championships to be played at Dunedin. RIFLE CLUB SEASON. OFFICIAL OPENING.
The official opening of the season by the Greytown Defence Rifle Club took place on the Papawai Range on Saturday afternoon.
Mr George Te Whaiti (president) declared the season open and expressed the hope that it would be a happy and successful one. The weather was dull and overcast, and the wind was tricky, but despite these conditions some good scores were registered. The afternoon shoot was ten shots at 500 yards and ten at 600 yards. In the 500 yards match three scores of 49 were registered by Guy Rhodes, il. R. Feast and Ray Ingley. G. Te Whaiti was next with 48. At 600 yards Guy Rhodes scored 47, making his total 96 out of a possible 100. Iraia Te Whaiti, a new competitor, scored 45 as also did D. J. Flynn and H. W. Feast. The following are the scores: —
The spoon winners were Guy Rhodes and I. Te Whaiti. Next Saturday’s competition will count for the Balfour Challenge Cup, being 7 shots at the 300yds., 500yds.. and 600yds. ranges.
