CARTERTON

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH GARDEN PARTY (‘■Times-Age” Special) In connection with the CartertonGladstone Presbyterjan Church Jubilee Celebrations a most enjoyable garden party was held at Mr Geo E. Allen’s beautiful grounds “Tipau,” Taratahi East, and was attended by fully 200 people. A most enjoyable time was spent. During the proceedings games and competitions were played. Afternoon tea and ice cream were provided Visitors were present from all parts of the district, and also from Wairoa, Wellington and Wanganui. Miss Harvey was present from Wairoa, Mrs Jas Lawrence from Wanganui and Mrs Hy McFarlane and her daughters from Wellington. On Saturday evening a Lantern Lecture, illustrated by coloured lantern slides, entitled “Across the Southern Alps,” was given by the Rev W. Bower Black, LL.B. There was a representative attendance in the church hall, and the lecturer was followed throughout with interest.

On Sunday morning a communion service was held, the Rev J. J. Bates officiating. The church was crowded. Parts of the cantata were repeated. The afternoon service was held in the Gladstone Church, and was conducted by the Rev W. B. Black. The church was crowded and the Cantata, “The Shepherd of Men” was rendered by the choir, under the baton of Mr J. L. Harris.

Bowling.

A pleasant afternoon’s play was enjoyed on the Carterton green on Saturday. The green played exceptionally well. Afternoon tea was provided <and presided over by Mesdames R. C. Thompson and F. Harrington. The following games were played: —W. Steven, Simmonds, R. Thompson, Sorensen (s), 13; McNally, Jolly, Wright (s), 26.

Members of the club are asked to enter their names upon the notice board for the various club competitions and champion rinks. Swimming Baths. A commencement was, made -this morning to clean out the municipal swimming baths, in preparation of the coming bathing season. The fire brigade Dennis pump is being used for the purpose. Tennis. Although not officially open for play there were a large number‘of players on - the Carterton Bowling Club’s lawn tennis courts on Saturday. The Carrington Park Club grounds were also fully occupied. Personal > Mr and Mrs E. T. Blakey, of Waitaia, were visitors to Carterton during show week. They have returned home. Labour Party Dance. The weekly dance and euchre tournament, conducted by the Carterton Labour Party’s social committee, and held in the Band Hall on Saturday evening, was well attended. The music was supplied by Messrs D. Te Tau, S. Te Tau, C. Hewitson and extras were played by Vic Bayde, T. A. Whai, W. Mason and J. Blake. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Mrs Ray (Wellington) and Mr E. Nicholson. The duties of M.’sC. were carried out by Messrs Uprichard and R. O’Keye. The prizes in the card tournament were won as follow: —Ladies, Mrs J. Lenihan, 1; Mrs Holland, 2; men, Mr J. Humphries, 1; Mr J. Verrell, Petone, 2. An excellent supper was served by the ladies’ committee which included Mesdame Benge, Oberg, Lenihan, Marfin, Anderson and Green. OBITUARY. MRS C. L. REYNOLDS. The death occurred at her home, “Middleton,” Taratahi on Saturday of Edith Nina, wife of Mr Charles L. Reynolds, at the age of 61 years. The late Mrs Reynolds had not enjoyed good health for some time, but her death came as a shock to a large circle of relatives and friends. Of a kindly quiet, unassuming nature she was loved by all she came in contact with and her death will be deeply regretted. The late Mrs Reynolds was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Charles Dakin, very old residents of the Clareville district, ‘and received her education at the Clareville School. For many years she was a teacher at the Clareville Sunday School. She leaves a widower, a son, Mr Stanley Reynolds, of Feilding, and two grand-children, besides three sisters, the Misses Olive and Grace Dakin, of Lansdowne, who are at present on a visit to England, and Mrs A. Rosse, also of Lansdowne. The funeral took place at the Clareville Cemetery this afternoon. CARTERTON GUN CLUB OPENING COMPETITION. The newly-formed Carterton Gun Club held their opening shoot on Saturday afternoon at the Carterton Racing Club’s grounds which were kindly lent for the occasion. There was a good attendance of shooting men. including competitors from Masterton. Pirinoa and Martinborough. Mr W. Howard Booth, the club s patron, welcomed those present and said that he hoped that the club would enjoy a successful season. He formally declared the season open. A trophy donated by Mr Geo A. Vincent was competed for, the winner be-

ing Jim McKenzie (19yds), who broke all birds (21). N. Prussing (15 yards) was second with 19 breaks. C. E. Gray (19 yards), D. McKenzie (19 yards), S. Hall (16 yards), and G. Sutherland (16 yards) tied for third place with 18 breaks. Joe Udy (17 yards), R. Williams (11 yards), with 17 breaks each, and W. H. Saunders (20 yards), with 16 breaks also shot well.

A sweepstake of 12 birds was held after the main event, and was divided by Jack McKenzie and lan Sutherland.
