CROQUET LAWNS
A CENTENNIAL SUGGESTION.
IMPROVEMENT OF NORTHERN APPROACH.
(io the Editor.)
Sir,—Some months ago there was a discussion on the shortage of croquet lawns in Masterton and we thought of that spare piece of land between the bridges separated from the park lawns by a creek. On taking a good look at this land, which at present is a disgrace to the Northern Approach to the town, it occurred to me how we could very easily make this ’land a beauty spot. In the first place the Allen Walk divides this ground in half. Well we are having a Centenary celebration in 1940. We have a' very worthy chief citizen, Mr T. Jordan, who has served Masterton faithfully and well for a number of years. Now how could Masterton better celebrate the centenary and Mr Jordan’s services and at the same time improve the Allen Walk and the Northern Approach to our town than by turning this piece of ground- into croquet lawns, basketball grounds and clothe the banks with flowers? Then I would suggest, to honour our Mayor, that this land could be called “Jordan Park.” I don’t think we have anything bearing Mr Jordan’s name in Masterton and I seriously commend this idea to the Beautifying Society and citizens of Masterton. The cost of improving and laying down lawns should be secondary to the beautiful place it could be turned into and, with the thousands of visitors to Wellington who will pass through Masterton in 1940, something should be done in the matter and quickly—Thanking you for space—l am, etc., “VISION.”
