S.M. COURT CASES. (“Times-Age” Special.) At a sitting of the Greytown S.M. Court yesterday, before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., John Parsons, of Upper Hutt, who was arrested in Featherston on Sunday for having been drunk while in charge of a motor car, was fined £lO and his licence cancelled for six months. Edward Twort, of Wellington, was fined £2, cost 10s for speeding through Greytown. D. G. Laurenson, of Wellington, was fined £l, costs-10s, for having no drivers’ licence. 1 lan Feast, of Featherston, was fined 30s, costs 10s, for having driven a car at Greytown without due care and attention. N. W. Thompson was fined 5s and costs 10s for having delivered a rifle without a permit. John V. Thompson was fined 5s and costs 10s, for having procured a firearm without a permit. . Pleasant Function. A pleasant function took place at Greytown on Thursday night when Mr and Mrs H. E. Webster entertained the cast of Ariadne Derby which was played, interspersed with party games. The prizes were won by Miss M. Collier and Mr G. Eagar. At the close of the gathering Mr G. F. Eagar expressed the thanks of all to Mr and Mrs Webster for their hospitality. “Paddy’s Market” The ladies of St Luke’s Guild will hold a “Paddy’s Market” on November 4, in the Crown Theatre. During the evening the Greytown Harmonica Band will make its first public appearance and Mr Alan Carter will give selections on the piano-accordion. Entertaining competitions will also be on the programme. GREYTOWN RIFLE CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Greytown Defence Rifle Club was held in the Working Men’s Club last night. Mr G. Ts Whaite (president) occupied the chair and fourteen members were present. The members stood as a mark of respect to the m'emory of their late patron, Mr A. B. Balfour. > ' . The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted on the motion of Mr H. C. Trotman, seconded by Mrs J. C. Feast. The annual report stated that the club congratulated Mr J. C. Feast on his selection to shoot in the New Zealand team at the Empire meeting at Sydney. During the season matches were fired against Ashhurst, Master-ton-Opaki, Karori and Petone. The club was also represented at Hastings, Wanganui', Hawera and Buller. The balance sheet showed that the season had commenced with a .credit of £l6 8s 4d and closed with £ll 2s 9d. Mr H. W. Feast asked if the club could use the Papawai Range. Mr Te Whaiti outlined the position at Papawai. He stated that the 800yds range would not be available owing to a boundary fence being on the mound. The 300yds, 500yds, 600yds and 900yds ranges were still available. The 800yds range could only be used by building up the mound about 3ft 6in. He stated that the suggestion of abandoning the rifle club would damage the Association as four clubs were required to keep the Association in existence. Mr Te Whaite stated that the Greytown Rifle Club should continue to operate. Mr C. J. Jury moved that the club be carried on. The motion was seconded by Mr H. C. Trotman and carried.
The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr J, F. Thompson; president, Mr G. Te Whaite; vice presidents, the same as last year with the addition of Mr H. G. Carter; match committee, Messrs G. Te Whaite and H. C. Trotman; delegates, Messrs C. J. Jury, H. W. Feast, H. C. Trotman; executive, Messrs G. Te Whaite, J. C. Feast, H. W. Feast, J. B. Bairstow, H. C. Trotman; auditor, Mr H. C. Trotman; sole selector, Mr W. J. Feast; handicappers, Messrs H. W. Feast and C. J. Jury; treasurer, Mr H. Walden; secretary, Mr H. Walden; assistant, Mr A. G. Rhodes.
The subscription was fixed as follows: —Ist year, ss; 2nd year 15s. The first practice is to take place on Saturday next. The official opening is set down for October 29 and invitations are to be sent to other clubs to attend. A circular letter from the National Rifle Association regarding the formation of a sniper platoon was read, and it was decided to record the club’s approval of the scheme. Messrs G. Rhodes and J. Yoemans signified their intentions to join the sniper platoon. Mr T. G. R. Ingley offered a cup to be called the Ingley Cup, to be fired for over the 300yds 500yds and 600yds ranges annually. Mr Ingley was applauded for his generous action.
Mr O. Peterson was thanked for his offer to repaper the targets. The prizes won during the past season were presented by Mr G. Te Whaite as follows:—Champion Shield, Mr J. C. Feast; Handicap Championship, Mr P. J. Nichols; Balfour Challenge Cup, Mr A. G. Rhodes; Te Whaite Challenge Cup for young members, Mr J. Yoemans; Matehara Cup (best service shoot in the club), Mr G. Te Whaite. Mr J. Yoemans was the winner of Mr C. J. Jury’s trophy for the most consistent young shot. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr H. Walden for his continued interest in the club, having been a rifle shot for 66 years. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr W. J. Feast in his illness and hopes were expressed for his speedy recovery. Mr H. G. Carter donated a cup for first year members provided 5 new members were enrolled. WOMEN’S DIVISION. A HAPPY MEETING. Thirty-four members of the Greytown Branch of the Women’s Division
of the Farmers’ Union enjoyed a happy monthly meeting in St Luke’s Hall, with the president in the chair. Apologies were received from Mesdames Wiggins, Barnard, O. Skeet and Miss Tate. Mrs Beer reported on the September social. ,An account for hall-hire and an account from headquarters were passed lor payment. A colection taken up realised 22s 6d, and this, with two parcels of goods, is being sent to the helpers of Makogai through the appeal headquarters. An invitation to the birthday party of the Pahautea Branch was received. Members were requested to send in special recipes for the Centenary Cookery Book. Further reference was made to Flock House, which had been accepted by the W.D.F.U. as a rest home for women. By request, the president gave rules and regulations for ruling a meeting. The November meeting is to be held in the evening of the usual day, and members of the local Farmers’ Union are to be the visitors on tht occasion. Afternoon tea was provided by the hostesses, Mesdames Fairbrother, Gregor, Johnson and York. Members were invited to provide supper for the evening meeting in November. Transferred to Pahiatua. Mr Johanson, of the Post Office staff, left yesterday on transfer to Pahiatua.
