LEAGUE OF MOTHERS
ADDRESS BY MRS BEEBY. There was a good attendance at the meeting of the Masterton League of Mothers, which was held in . the St Matthew’s Parish Hall yesterday afternoon. The president (Mrs L, B. Maunsell) occupied the chair. Four new members were enrolled. The League Choir sang “Morning Invitation,” and “Fairy Marque.” In the last mentioned item the solo was sung by Mrs E. J. Blake. The speaker of the day was Mrs C., E. Beeby, 8.A., of Wellington, who took for her subject “This Discipline Business.” Ideas on the thorny subject of discipline, said Mrs Beeby had changed somewhat from those of our grandparents. In their day, the simple precept of spare the rod, and spoil the child, was generally adhered to. Some people were of the opinion that now the swing was perhaps too great in the other direction. Parents should endeavour to cultivate a positive, friendly attitude towards their children. There could be no fixed or set rules of discipline, as children differed so. Corporal punishment was quite out of favour nowadays, but it was very necessary for both parents to come to some agreement as to the sort of discipline they intended to enforce. It was also very necessary to allow for the growth of the mind as. well as the body. , Mrs Beeby told many apt.apd illustrative stories and on concluding was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. The tea hostesses were Mesdames A. Corskie, W. S. Dickens, E. M. Engstrom, A. Stubbings and F. J. Traynor.
