GREYTOWN
ST. LUKE’S CHURCH. PATRONAL FESTIVAL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual patronal festival of St. Luke’s Church, Greytown, was held last night. The service was conducted by the Rev. Canon Sykes, assisted by the Rev. F. O. Ball, of Martinborough. The preacher was the Rev. F. C. Long, of Wellington. The service was fully choral and Mr E. Graham was the soloist. 'After the service supper was served in the Parish Hall, under the supervision of Mesdames Day and Rees. School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Greytown District High School Committee , was held last night. There were pre- ' sent: Messrs H. G. Carter (chairman), F. Dennes (treasurer), Mrs Knell (secretary), and Messrs J. Herod, H. Trotman, J. Morison, H. Bassett and H. E. Webster (headmaster). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs E. Graham and W. G. K. Wiggins. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr H. E. Webster in his recent bereavement. The Education Board wrote stating that a grant had been authorised for a new 15-stall bicycle shed; also that the building inspector had been instructed to report on the tool shed alterations. The Board also advised that no child under school age could travel on the school bus. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £9 18s 3d. The dental nurse made application for several items and these were left in the hands of the chairman to deal with. The headmaster reported the roll numbers for September to be as follow: —Secondary 44. average 37.2; primary 297. average 245. Isolated cases of measles still continue to appear, he stated, and the attendance had been reduced through colds and influenza. The sowing of the gardens was almost completed. The primary plots had been sown in lespedeza and tree seeds, and portion of the kitchen garden. The secondary experiments covered lespedeza as well as manorial experiments with carrots, mangolds, sugar beet and potatoes. The following had applied for examinations:— Training College Entrance, one; University Entrance, three; School Certificate, one. Samples of work done by a new duplicator were submitted and it was decided to discuss the matter at the next meeting when the treasurer will submit a full statement regarding the funds.
A circular from the Health Department regarding milk for cocoa and malted milk was held over for a report from the Wairarapa Milk Committee. The attention of fne committee was drawn to new salary regulations as affecting the Greytown School. The committee decided to draw the attention of the Minister of Education and the member for the district to the anomoly of District High Schools. in the new regulations. The Board 1 members for Wairarapa are also to be consulted on this matter.
