SLIP IN GORGE
LINE CLOSED TILL SUNDAY PERMANENT WAY UNDAMAGED (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N„ October 14. The slip which came down yesterday in the Manawatu Gorge and blocked the railway line the second time since October 1, when another slip fell, is of considerable proportions, and indications are that the line will be closed until Sunday. So far as can be ascertained, the permanent way is undamaged. The slip is situated on the face of a bluff which has fallen away in previous years to leave a somewhat smooth batter, but where the slip fell, however, remains a portion of the bluff. To the right of the fall is a large outcrop of rock, the toe of which was, years ago, cut away perpendicularly to make a passage for the railway line. This outcrop has remained in position, but a section adjoining it has come away to form the slip, which is composed of rubble, soil and boulders. Above the present slip is another cutcrop which will be removed, and gangs of men worked on it today.
