Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon has been reelected president of the Canterbury Chamber. of Commerce and Sir, Cyril Ward vice-president. Mr- H. Greenwood, librarian of the Dunedin Athenaeum,, has been appointed city librarian of Palmerston North, and will take up his duties there about the beginning of next month.

The Rev G. V. Gerard, Bishop-elect of Waiapu, left Auckland yesterday by motor-car for Napier. He will go into retreat for a short period before his consecration as bishop on October 28.

. Mi- John A. Dunning, M.A. (Oxon), M.Sc. (N.Z.), who has been on the teaching staff of John McGlashan College, Dunedin, since 1929, has been appointed to the position of principal of Scots College, Warwick, Queensland. This college is a Presbyterian boarding school for boys. Mr Dunning will leave to take up his new position at the beginning of next year. Mr W. H. Brown, Palmerston North, has been elected unopposed to fill the vacancy on the Wanganui Education Board caused by the disqualification of Mr W. G. Black at the biennial elections. Mr .Black beat the sitting member, Mr M. H. Oram, and attended the August meeting of the board but later was disqualified because of a technical non-compliance with the provisions of the Local Authorities Members’ Contract Act, 1934. , There was a large and representative attendance of mourners at the funeral yesterday afternoon of the late Mr James Candy, a well-known and highly respected resident of Masterton. The Rev*E. J. Rich conducted a service at the residence and also officiated at the graveside. Included among numerous beautiful wreaths ' were those from the following: Masterton Orchestral Society, playing members of the Orchestra and Masterton Municipal Band. The pall-bearers were Messrs Rupert Payne and W. J. Candy (nephews),. G. W. Hutchinson (representing the Municipal Band), D. Allen and E. Larsen (Orchestra) and W. H. Judd (Masterton Masonic Lodge No. 19). Born on January 14, 1855, at Glasgow, Mr Neil McNeil, of Clan McNeil of Barra, died at Woodville this week. He went to sea at the age of 14, and several times sailed round the world. He settled in New Zealand about sixty years ago, being engaged in farming pursuits in both the North and South Islands. In 1890 he married a Mrs Collins, and of their union there were two sons, Archibald John, of Waitara. and Hughie Neil, of Woodville. There were six step-children, Messrs W. Collins (Tikokino) and A. Collins (Woodville), and Mesdames W. Topliss (Waitara), F. Harding (Masterton), A. Hoggard (Danncvirke), and the late Mrs W. Glcison The late Mr McNeil and family went to the Woodville district to reside about 40 years ago.
