POLLING TODAY
ALMOST A MILLION ELECTORS HEAVY VOTE EXPECTED. ARRANGEMENTS FOR GIVING RESULTS. Polling is taking place today for the election of Parliamentary representatives throughout New Zealand and on the issue of National Prohibition and in certain electorates, including Masterton, on the question of local no-licence or restoration. For the first time in the history of Now Zealand there are almost a million electors on the roll and in view of the keen campaign that has been conducted and the issues at stake, a particularly heavy poll is anticipated. The polls will close at 7 p.m. and the first progress returns should come to hand about 7.30. As there are straightout contests in the great majority of electorates, the finals of some of the city seats should be known' about 8.30 o’clock, while those for some of the country constituencies should be known about an hour later.
■ Special arrangements .have been made by the “Wairarapa Times-Age” for the prompt posting of returns, as they come to hand, on the display boards erected in front of the building. Details of the voting in the Masterton electorate on the Parliamentary and no-licence polls will be given, also particulars of the Parliamentary contest for the Wairarapa seat while progress and final returns of contests throughout New Zealand will be posted up as soon as these come to hand. The candidates for the Masterton seat have been invited to speak from the “TimesAge” building, immediately the result of the poll is known. Motorists are reminded that the portion of Chapel Street adjacent to the “Times-Age” building will be closed to motor traffic, by order of the Borough Council, from 6.30 p.m. onwards. The portion to be roped off extends from Jackson Street to Perry and Cole, streets. Motorists who have been in the habit of using the , W.F.C.A’. Ltd. parking area in Chapel Street will find it necessary to make other aiTangements for the parking of their cars. HEAVY POLLING RUSH AT MUNICIPAL HALL THIS MORNING. Everything points to a record poll being recorded in the Masterton electorate. This morning so great was the number of electors desiring to vote at the Municipal Hall between 9 and 10,30 o’clock that the formation of a queue was necessary at the entrance doors. Later in the morning the rush eased off to some extent, though there was still a large number voting throughout the remainder of the morning. At the Courthouse, officials were kept particularly busy dealing with absentee voters, of whom there appeared to be a large number desiring to record their votes.
