CENTRAL SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Central School Committee was held last night. There were present Messrs J. MeV. Calwell (chairman), W. R. Nicol, A. V. Dixon, G. Beecroft, A. Newman, S. Wesney, A. J. Gibbs, J. H. Cole. The financial report was submitted and received. The headmaster presented a satisfactory report in which he stated that the epidemic of measles was gradually abating, though a few cases of .a mild type continued. The present roll at the main school was 536, average attendance 466, per cent 87. Side School: Roll 83, average attendance 79.5, per centage 96. The Parents Association wrote requesting that some action should be taken so that the combined library books could be divided among the schools entitled thereto without further delay. The secretary was instructed to write to the Education Board in regard to the matter. The Health Department submitted proposals for a scheme for supplying dried malted milk at schools. The committee decided that the scheme could not be effectively put into operation in so large a school as the Central, nor could the requisite apparatus, etc., be provided by the committee. The question of procuring a lawn mower for the purpose of keeping the recreation ground in order was considered, and Mr Beecroft intimated that the Parents Association would contribute £25 towards the purchase of a lawn mower if the committee would provide the balance of the amount required. It was decided to authorise the purchase of the mower and request the Education Board to assist. Members expressed appreciation of the generous action of the Parents’ Association in the matter. The Education Board advised that the remodelling of the Central School would be proceeded with, and the secretary was directed to point out to the Board that a sufficient number of hand basins should be supplied for the children attending the school.

Messrs Newman, Nicol and Gibbs were appointed visiting rqembers for the ensuing month.
