“LEFT IN THE DARK”
COUNTY COUNCIL AND TRUCKING YARDS. ’ VIEWS AT YESTERDAY'S MEETING. The opinion that the council had been left in the dark regarding a proposal to shift the trucking yards from the railway station to Solway, was expressed by several councillors at yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton County Council. It was contended that as the council was representative of farming interests it should have been consulted in the matter. It was decided to make arrangements for the council to be represented at a meeting to be held -this morning at which the General Manager of Railways, Mr H. G. Mackley, will be presen i. Councillor G. Moore said he understood that the suggested removal of the trucking yards was being arranged by the Masterton Borough Council and the stock firms and that the people really interested, the farming community, had apparently not been notified as to what was going on. He was surprised that the county had not been informed of the proposed change. The saleyards in I Columba Road were becoming very important to the district as a big trade was developing in store sheep, large I numbers of which were being sent to Waikato and other northern districts. Breeders in those districts were finding Masterton bred ewes well suited to their requirements. The trade was assuming large proportions and should be catered for. There was no reason why the present yards at the station should not be improved and it was unnecessary to take stock all the way from the saleyards to Solway. The chairman, Mr Gordon Lee, said it looked as if the council was being left in the dark. The council had fought hard to have a good stock route built up the banks of the Waipoua River. Councillor Moore said he had been informed that’ Masterton was sixth on the list for the Dominion for truckingstock. If that were so, adequate trucking facilities should be provided by the department. On his motion it was agreed that the council be represented at this morning’s meeting.
