TOWNWOMEN’S GUILD
MONTHLY MEETING. INTERESTING ADDRESS ON THE MAORIS. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Townswomen’s Guild was held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall yesterday afternoon, there being a good attendance of members. Mrs A. L. Bennett presided, in the unavoidable absence of the president, Mrs W. H. Judd. Members were advised that arrangements were well in hand for the Guild’s third birthday, which is to be held in November. The roll call was “Camping Hints,” several good hints being given by members. Parcels were received from members for distribution to orphanages at Christmas time. Vocal items were rendered by Miss Yolande Ruby and Miss' Edith Ralph. Miss Ruby’s songs were “Oh. My Garden Full of Roses,” and “When the Almond Blossoms Fall,” Miss Ralph singing “Waiata Poi” and “A Heart That’s Free.” The items 'were all greatly appreciated. With the approval of members, it was decided to hold a meeting in December. Nurse M. Hodges chose for the subject of her address, “The Maoris,” with whom, as District Nurse; she came so much into contact. From a health viewpoint, and with the aid of charts, Nurse Hodges spoke of the manner in which the highest coloured race in the world had been detrimentally influenced in the past by association with the pakeha. Now, however, the Maoris were becoming educated and taking advantage of helpful advice. Infant mortality, in particular, although still high, had decreased considerably. Women’s organisation could assist greatly by welcoming Maori members., The address was listened to with keen interest by all present, and upon concluding Nurse Hodges was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. j Buffet afternoon tea, followed by the singing of the Guild Ode, Concluded a most enjoyable meeting. )
