MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL. McKENZIE’S BRIDGE TENDERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday. The chairman, Mr E. W. Cheetham presided and there were also present Councillors R. Judd, D. Bennett, A. Gray, and A. Forsberg. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor C. Welch. The finance report was submitted showing a debit balance of £3lO 13s sd. Accounts were passed totalling *£525 8s 3d. - » • The Audit Office returned the balance sheet for March 31, 1938, duly audited. The balance sheet was adopted and was directed to be printed. Two tenders for 'the construction of McKenzie’s Bridge at Mangamahoe were submitted and it was decided to recommend the tender of Messrs Rhodes and McPherson amounting to £1554 to the Main Highways Board for approval. The Masterton County Council forwarded a revised proposed new bylaw’ concerning crossings over drains and watercourses for the approval of the council. It was decided to approve same as submitted with slight variations. The Transport Department requested the views of the council in regard to proposals to form regulations requiring new licence drivers to display a leaners’ plate, an L sign on the vehicle, following the system in Great Britain. The council were not quite,in accord with the suggestion and considered that a regulation might usefully be adopted providing for the issue of a provisional licence to new drivers for a term of three months. The chairman reported that Mr F. W. Parry had requested the assistance of the council towards constructing a groyne in the vicinity of his property. It was decided that the matter be left in the hands of the chairman to arrange with Mr Parry at about half cost to the council and to Mr Parry. The secretary of the Canterbury Progress League forwarded a copy of correspondence with the Minister of Finance regarding the question of motor spirits taxation and highways finance for the information of the council. The overseer reported satisfactory progress of all work during the past month and prospective work was discussed and arranged for.
