NATIONAL PARTY
ENJOYABLE AT HOME. (“Times-Age” Special.) An “At Home” organised by the lad-, ies’ committee of the Greytown branch of the National Party was held in St Luke’s Hall, Greytown, yesterday afternoon. The halVwas beautifully decorated with large bowls of flowering cherry, lilac and other spring flowers. A large Union Jack, draped artistically, was a fitting background on the stage. ' Miss Eager (president) warmly wel-. corned the large and representative gathering and formally introduced Mr J. F. Thompson, the wife of the candidate, who, she stated, was well and favourably known to most of those present. Vocal items were given by Mesdames R. Burch, R. Ingley and Trayton (Masterton). An amusing competition “Book Titles” was won by Miss Higginson. The prize for the most original effort was won by Mrs Ron Eager, the title, “Great Expectations,” was represented by a fullpage illustration of National Party candidates. Other representations were of a topical nature and caused much amusement. Miss O. Wolters (Carterton) briefly addressed the gathering, giving an interesting report of the work accomplished at the recent Dominion conference of the National Party, held in Wellington, when those present received great encouragement and inspiration from the leader in their endeavour to secure the return of National Party candidates at the general election. Mrs T. R. Barrer (Masterton) spoke of the economic troubles prevailing in France and America through unsound business principles adopted by their respective governments, a policy closely followed by the Party now occupying the Treasury Benches in New Zealand. The speaker entreated her listeners to vote National and so secure the country quota being returned to power, as the welfare of the Dominion was bound up with the primary producers, and all they stood for. Mrs J. F. Thompson called upon two very popular and hard-working officials, Miss Eager (president) and Mrs Bunny (secretary) to receive a handsome shoulder spray each as a small token of admiration and appreciation for their efforts on behalf of the ladies’ Committee of the Greytown branch of the National Party. Mrs Edwards (Carterton) moved a hearty vote of thanks to the hostesses on behalf of the visitors for a very pleasant and profitable afternoon’s entertainment which was carried by acclamation. An enthusiastic gathering closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
