EKETAHUNA

PERSONAL. (“Times-Age” Special.) Miss Dorothy Jeffreys, of Te Awamutu, is the guest of her aunt, Mrs M. R. Herbert. Miss Jeffreys is to proceed to Wellington to enter the Dental Clinic for training. Pastures IDoing Well. The pastures are coming away well and there is a good growth of grass on most of the farms, which has resulted in the milk supply having increased. The Dairy Industry. It is a noticeable fact that more “hard feed” is now being grown in the district for dairy cows than has been' the case in the past. Dairy farmers are beginning to realise that unless their cows are fed properly they cannot expect to obtain the best results. Herd testing is also receiving more attention than formerly, and generally speaking the district is making rapid advancement as a dairying centre. Pig Industry. The rearing of pigs is a portion of the business of small farmers that has made considerable progress in the district. In the Nireaha district Mr Arthur Golder, formerly of Masterton, has been very successful indeed in pig farming, and has produced some of the best stock in the North Island. Farmers in Eketahuna are beginning to realise that substantial profits can be made from the rearing of pigs and there is now a fairly keen demand for the right type of breeding pig. The Pig Club movement is also engaging attention. Growing of Crops. Though the growing of oats and wheat is not engaged in to any appreciable extent in the district there are crops sown in favoured localities. Rape, of course, is grown in fairly large areas for the fattening of stock. Ensilage, too, and fodder for dairy cows are part of the crop programme of the small dairy farmer of the district. It is pleasing to record that the farmers of the district are paying very close attention to the proper management of their stock, realising that it is quality that produces quantity and the greatest profits.
