LAWN TENNIS

MASTERTON PARK CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the 17th annual report of the Masterton Park Lawn Tennis Club:—The committee has much satisfaction in recording another successful season during which there has been a considerable improvement in the standard of play. The season was officially opened on Saturday, October 23, 1937, the ceremony being performed by the club’s president, Mr L. S. Nicol. The weather was ideal, there was a good attendance of members and friends, and an enjoyable combined Yankee tournament was held. The financial position is still very sound though the cash balance is somewhat smaller than last year. This decrease is accounted for by the replacing of crockery, honours boards and repairs to umpires stands. The usual club competitions were held during the season and our congratulations are extended to the winners of the various events, viz:—Ladies’ championship singles, Miss P. Hessell; men’s championship singles, Mr E. Handyside; ladies’ B grade championship, Mrs C. K. Long; men’s B grade championship, Mr R. Clarke; ladies’ handicap singles, Miss P. Hessell; men’s handicap singles, Mr T. Denbee; ladies’ handicap doubles, Mrs C. K. Long and Miss B. Martel; men’s handicap doubles, Mr T. Denbee and Mr R. Clarke; combined handicap doubles, Mrs C. K. Long and Mr H. Worthington. The club has enjoyed a very successful season in the competitions arranged by the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association and by winning the B grade competition and being run-ner-up in the C grade competition, the members have good reason to be proud of their representatives. These results are indeed gratifying and may be attributed to the beneficial results of regular club practice. The Tennis Club dance was revived this year and a very pleasant evening was spent in the Savage Club rooms. The function resulted in a small profit being added to the funds. The trophies won during the season were presented on closing day, when Mrs L. S. Nicol served a delicious afternoon tea. The committee regrets that additional courts have not been provided, but in view of the increasing hours of leisure and the growing popularity of tennis it is hoped that this will be done in the near future. In conclusion we wish to thank all office-bearers, the ladies’ committee, the Borough Council, the Park staff, the Press, and all who have in various ways facilitated the management and helped to maintain the good fellowship and sportsmanship which is a feature of the club. —For the committee, L. S. Nicol, President; S. D. Charleson and A. J. Handyside, joint hon secretaries.
