SHIPS IN PORT

EXTENSION OF TELEPHONE SERVICE.

A further development in dock telephone facilities was recently inaugurated when eight unappropriated berths in the South West India Docks were equipped with portable telephone sets. Many of the “appropriated berths” in the docks (i.e. berths allocated for the specific use of particular Shipping Lines) have, of course, been similarly equipped for some years. The new facility has been provided by the Post Officffie in co-operation with the Port of London Authority. In future the master of a vessel docking in the South West India Docks will be able, on application to the P.L.A. Departmental Officer, to have a telephone installed on board immediately the vessel is berthed.
