MEMORIAL CLUB ANNUAL REPORT. PAST SEASON’S ACTIVITIES. The annual report of the Memorial Lawn Tennis Club for the 1937-38 season states: “The season undoubtedly was one of the most successful experienced since the inception of the club and it is particularly gratifying to record the substantial increase in membership, there being 134 active players as against 93 for the previous season. Even with this increase, the club’s ten courts amply provided for all players, who were fully catered for in this respect. “The alterations and improvements to the pavilion effected during the off-season, and the purchase of new equipment provided additional facilities which were much appreciated by members. The club is indebted to the Trust Lands Trustees for a generous contribution towards the cost of these works and also to one of the club’s staunch supporters for assistance in arranging financial accommodation, without which the completion of the improvements, etc., would not have been possible. “Teams were again entered in the A, B and C grades of the Wairarapa Association’s competitions, and although none of the teams was successful, there were many enjoyable matches and it was evident that the competition which these provided improved the standard of play. Home and away matches were played with Lyall Bay, and a team also visited Tinui. We are indebted to these clubs for the hospitality extended. “Our groundsman, Mr F. McCarthy, again had the courts in first-class condition and provided a playing surface second to none in the Wairarapa. We regret that Mr McCarthy’s health prevents him from carrying on as our groundsman, and take this opportunity of expressing our sincere thanks for the efficient and loyal service which he has rendered the club over a long period of years. “The courts, as in previous years, were made available for the use of the Wairarapa Association during its annual tournament. Congratulations are extended to Miss R. G. Bradley, the club’s sole representative in the Wairarapa team. The internal club competitions were well supported by members and many keen and .interesting games resulted.
