ELECTION ISSUES
PARLIAMENTARY AND LIQUOR POLLS. In addition to the election of a Parliamentary representative, voters at the forthcoming general election will be called upon to vote on the licensing issue. In the case of electorates, such as Masterton, in which no-licence is in force, besides the national issue of prohibition or continuance, a vote also is taken on local option. For the latter a two-thirds majority is required to carry either restoration or continuance of no-licence, but in the case of the national issue a bare majority rules. Persons entitled to vote on the Parliamentary franchise are likewise able to exercise their rights on the liquor poll. An elector must be 21 years of age, must be a British subject by birth or by naturalisation in New Zealand, must have resided in New Zealand for a year and in the electoral district in which he desires to vote for not less than three months immediately preceding the date on which application for enrolment is made. Enrolments on the supplementary roll are now proceeding, the Masterton total to date being about 800. There are 10,286 names on the main roll.
