BASKETBALL TOURNEY

YESTERDAY’S GAMES AT TIMARU. WAIRARAPA DEFEATED. By Telegraph—Press Association. TIMARU, September 2. Cold and showery weather prevailed for the third day of the Dominion basketball championships, but the games proceeded with the courts slippery and militating against good play. The first A grade game of the day saw Southland beat Hawke’s Bay by one goal, which was scored after call of time. This is the second occasion during the tournament that Hawke’s Bay has lost a game after time was called. Rain fell during the game, players having to seek shelter, and the courts had to be swept before play recommenced. Better combination in the concluding stages decided the issue in favour of Southland. Considering the conditions, the game between Wellington and Canterbury was a splendid one. Both teams threw the ball about freely, despite the wet court, and scoring fluctuated in a manner which invested the match with a great deal of interest. Canterbury were one down a minutes before time, but managed to draw level just before the bell sounded.

South Canterbury continued their winning way in the second grade, beating Wairarapa 14 —7. Southland Minor scored two good wins, and are now one point behind South Canterbury. Both have played the same number of games, but Southland had a draw in the third grade. Bush have now had six wins in six games in the third grade. West Coast are next with 10 points, and Wanganui have nine, but they have played one game less than the leaders. Results:—
