SUPERSTITIONS
SOME THAT ARE LITTLE KNOWN. If one took note of all the superstitions in the world and adhered to their restrictions, life would be very cramped and unpleasant. For instance, consider these little-known superstitions: It is bad luck for a boat to sail on a Friday, and it is a bad omen for a shark to follow a vessel. The actual christening of a ship is a superstition, for it is a custom descended from the ancient ceremony of offering wine to Neptune to gain his favour. It is supposed to be unlucky for three unmarried brothers to live in one town. Green-eyed people were once said to be allied with witches and sorcerers. Their evil influence could be avoided by spitting three times on the fingertips and waving them in the air. Itching feet are said to indicate a voyage to another place. If bad luck is to be prevented, two brothers should never marry two sisters. It was considered of great importance a couple of centuries ago to hold the fingers downward while washing them, to let evil spirits depart with the dripping water.
