WOMEN’S HOCKEY
NEW ZEALAND TOURNEY. YESTERDAY’S RESULTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, August 31. The New Zealand women’s hockey tournament was continued today in heavy showers. Canterbury has won section C, Eastern Southland leads Auckland in section B, and Ashburton leads Wairarapa in section A. Section play will commence tomorrow. Today’s results were resection A: Hawke’s Bay 2, Manawatu 1; Wairarapa 3, Wanganui 1. Section B: Auckland 1, Taranaki 0; Eastern Southland 7, Poverty Bay B 0; Wellington 6, Ruahine 0. Section .C: Canterbury 7, Akitio 0; Feilding 2, Poverty Bay A 2. Wairarapa made a good recovery against Wanganui, who led 1-0 until the last ten minutes, when Misses Cadwallader, H. Henderson and J. Harding scored in quick succession to give Wairarapa victory. In a game mostly in their favour, these players were the best of the Wairarapa forwards. Miss Barnes played a bright centrehalf game, and Miss Keltie was a strong full-back. Miss M. Wiwi was a clever centre-forward for Wanganui, and scored their only goal. Miss T. Wiwi was a fast winger, Miss Sherriff a strong half, and Miss Waldren a solid full-back.
