NEW ZEALAND POTATOES
INCREASED CONSUMPTION URGED. Observations on the state of the potato market at the present time were made by a Masterton resident this morning. Referring to the fact that potatoes at present were selling at a remarkably cheap price for this time of the year, he pointed out that potatoes were one commodity in which the costs of production had not, apparently, been taken into account and as a result the public were receiving the benefit of the cheap prices ruling at present. As potatoes usually formed a very substantial part of the average householder’s diet, no doubt most people would be taking advantage of the lower ruling rates to cheapen living expenses. The opinion was expressed that people generally could consume considerably more potatoes than was the case at present and in doing so they would be giving material assistance to the grower. At the corresponding time last year, he said, potatoes were selling at from 9s to 10s per cwt. and it could readily be seen what a big saving could be effected by increasing the consumption of this New Zealand commodity.
