TALKS IN PRAGUE
7 RESUMPTION EXPECTED PRESIDENT AND SUDETEN REPRESENTATIVES LORD RUNCIMAN’S EFFORTS By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.10 a.m.) PRAGUE, August 29. It is authoritatively learned that Dr Benes and Herr Kundt will discuss the Government’s new proposals. It is also reported that Herr Henlein and Viscount Runciman have agreed to meet again in a few days’ time. An earlier message from Prague reported that it was reliably stated that Lord Runciman had tried to induce Herr Henlein, the Sudeten leader, to water down the eight points in his Carlsbad speech in view of the growing gravity of- the international situation. SECRET INTERVIEW. RESULTS NOT DISCLOSED. PRAGUE, August 29. Lord Runciman returned to Prague overnight. Beyond the fact that his interview with Herr Henlein lasted for two hours nothing has been allowed to become known of its purport though everywhere it is surmised that he appealed to the Sudetens to reciprocate the Czechs’ conciliatory gesture. Herr Henlein’s deputy, Herr Franck, in a speech today, said: “Matters have been brought before us upon which it< is necessary to make an immediate decision, but we cannot give up any of the right which God has conferred.”
OPINION IN BERLIN. POSITION PARTICULARLY GRAVE. BERLIN, August 29. Well-informed circles consider that the situation is particularly grave because the inspired German Press has worked the public up to expect that something positive will be done. Sir John Simon’s speech on Saturday has shaken the belief that Britain will be a passive spectator.
