TWO MAORIS BEFORE COURT. OTHER CHARGES PENDING. Joseph Uru, aged 29, and Hawea Governor, aged 24, two Maori labourers. appeared in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mi' R. Krahagen, J.P., charged with breaking and entering the Hamua store on August 26 and stealing goods, the property of M. G. Bailey, valued at £3l 15s sd. On the application of Detective-Ser-geant W. Kane, the two accused were remanded until September 15. Bail was allowed in each case, self £lOO and one surety of £2OO or two of £lOO. An order was also made that accused report daily to the police if on bail. x Detective-Sergeant Kane said he had no objection to bail being granted, but asked that in view of the gravity of the offences it be made substantial, particularly as several other charges of a similar nature were pending. Goods alleged to have been taken by the accused were listed in the charge sheet as follow: —Two 701 b. bags of sugar. 4 101 b. tins of biscuits. 11 packets of tea. 3 cartons of honey, 12 tins of baked beans. 3 tins of baking powder. 2 jars of peanut butter, 5 jars of sandwich paste, 3 tins of paint, 3 bottles of wood stains, 5 41b. bags of oatina. 3 packets of creamota, 25 cakes of soap, 3 tins of soup, 7 tins of tinned meats, 31 tins of tinned fish. 3 tins of custard powder, 6 tins of pineapple, 29 packets of chocolate, 5 packets of candles, 60 packets of cigarette papers. 56 2oz. tins of tobacco, 1950 cigarettes and one motor battery. SMART POLICE WORK. The arrests yesterday were the result of smart work by Detective-Sergeant Kane, who accompanied by .Constables C. H. Reardon, L. Downes and R. Hill, made a swift raid on premises and a property about two miles from Masterton. The execution of a search warrant and a subsequent thorough search brought to light a large proportion of the goods named on the charge sheet. The police believe that 'he arrests will clear up the recent series of burglaries in the Masterton amt Pahiatua districts. _____
