WRESTLING POPULAR

TOURNAMENTS IN FRANCE. A mast in a field, at its foot a sheep, the first prize, and other prizes attached to it, with gay ribbons flying from the top, is a signal in Brittany that a wrestling tournament is to be held. Young men come from far to these wrestling tournaments, and in the irowd of spectators are to be seen many picturesque costumes, not only worn by the women, but by the men. Tripping is allowed, and each competitor wears a shirt of strong linen, which his adversary may grasp. A fall is recorded only when both shoulders of one of the wrestlers (touch the ground together. The winner of the contest must carry the sheep he has won in his arms round the ring, and even then if anyone in the crowd calls “Halt!” he must wrestle once more with this new challenger and win before the prize is definitely his.
