MAGISTRATE’S COURT
FORTNIGHTLY MASTERTON SITTING. POLICE AND BYLAW CASES. Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided at the fortnightly sitting of the Masterton Magistrate’s Court held this morning. A charge of driving a motor car without due care and attention was preferred against Cyril Joseph O’Donnell. A further charge of failing to give way to traffic on his right at an intersection was withdrawn when defendant entered a plea of guilty to the first charge. Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett stated that the charges were the outcome of a collision on the Fernridge-Kai-tuna Road. Mr S. V. Gooding, who appeared for defendant, said that visibility was bad at the scene of the accident. Defendant had shown refreshing candour and had made no attempt to shift the blame. Counsel suggested that the drivers of both cars were probably guilty of negligence. Mr Lawry convicted and fined O’Donnell £2 and 12s costs. For failing to give way to a vehicle approaching from the right at an intersection, Francis Rimene was convicted and fined £2 and costs £l. On a charge of having no warrant of fitness defendant was convicted and fined 10s and 10s costs. “It is time to get a warrant,” remarked Mr Lawry, in fining George Albert Gregory £1 and costs 10s for not having a warrant of fitness. Operating a motor cycle without sufficient lights cost William Stuart Strand 10s and 10s costs. CIVIL BUSINESS. Judgment for plaintiff •by default was given in the following undefended civil claims: —Annie McClea v Alexander Y. Taplin, claim £49, costs £4 3s; Masterton Borough Council v Mary Ellen Blinkhorne, claim £6 6s, costs £1 10s 6d.
