New Form of Chain Letter.
A chain letter of a new type is now in circulation. The old tale of the impoverished Spanish grandee imprisoned in Madrid for debt, and his plaintive appeal for funds through an intermediary in Barcelona, has been discarded for a New Zealand setting. The letter follows the usual naive instruction not to defy fate by breaking the chain. In that alone does it have a semblance to the chain letters which have benefited the Post and Telegraph Department in the past. Its contents are an attack on the alleged favouritism of the Government of one religious denomination, and it ends with advice to the electors as to how they should vote. A copy of the letter has been handed to Mr T. Milliken, chairman of the Canterbury divisional executive of the National Party. In a statement to the Press, Mr Milliken said: “I desire to take the earliest opportunity of dissociating the New Zealand National Party from any connection with the letter.” The letter received by Mr Milliken does not contain any clue as to the identity of the party or organisation which made “the first link” in the chain.
