OPERATION OF NATIONAL SERVICE ACCOUNTS SHOW SUBSTANTIAL CREDIT (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A credit balance of £99,382 0s lOd is shown in the revenue account of the National Broadcasting Service for the year end March 31, 1938. The annual report and statement of accounts of the National Broadcasting Services, which were presented in the House of Representatives yesterday, state that this sum has been transferred to the accumulated fund. The account shows that the expenditure incurred by the National Broadcasting Service amounted to £212,435 Is 2d. The largest individual item of expenditure was one of £109,525 16s 6d on programmes, including salaries of the programme staff, maintenance of plant, including salaries of engineering and operating staffs, absorbed £34,458 ss, and general administrative and running expenses, including salaries of administrative and clerical staffs accounted for £28,548 9s 9d. An amount of £34,766 2s was allowed for depreciation of assets. Revenue of the service amounted to .£311,718 2s Id. Of this sum £308,022 17s was provided by the licence fees paid’ by listeners. The other sources of revenue were interest payments amounting to £3215 19s 9d and £578 5s 4d obtained from rents. The report states that partly because of increased transmitting hours and partly because of the operation of additional stations, programme expenditure increased at the rate of £34,800 per annum, and maintenance costs at the rate of £14,000 per annum.
