BASKETBALL

PLAY IN THE AUSTRALIAN TOURNEY SOME PROPOSED CHANGES , IN RULES MELBOURNE, August 18. Today’s basketball games resulted: Tasmania beat New Zealand, 32-17. Queensland beat New South Wales, 22-20. Victoria beat South Australia, 26-18. The New Zealand team was: —Miss M. Matangi, Miss E. Sinclair, Miss F. Southon, Miss M. Howe, Miss J. Willson, Miss M. Tangye, Miss E. Howard. Tasmania played a good, open game, their definite passing movements giving the goal-throwers good opportunities. New Zealand lost through inaccurate shooting. The rules conference recommends the elimination of the centre bounce and play outside the court, and the adoption of seven players, a 100 by 50 court, and no guarding. The conference favoured the New Zealand personal contact and running rules, and the adoption of English rules when Australia and New Zealand rules differed. An invitation has been extended to the Australian team to participate in the centennial tournament, and an inter-Empire conference has been suggested to be held in New Zealand in 1940. The game between Australia and New Zealand on Saturday will be played without the centre bounce.
