OBITUARY

MRS A. W. HOGG. The death occurred last evening of Mrs Bedelia Hogg, widow of the Hon. A. W. Hogg, who represented Masterton in the House of Representatives for a period of 21 years and was for a time Minister of Lands. The late Mrs Hogg, who was 82 years of age, had been ’in indifferent health for some time, although she had remained remarkably active until about a fortnight ago. Born in Dublin, Ireland; she came to New Zealand when she was a young girl and after her marriage in Dunedin, lived for a while in Ashburton and Timaru. She then came to Masterton, where she had resided for well over fifty years. Mr Hogg, who whs a journalist by profession, came to Masterton to edit "The Wairarapa Star” and soon afterwards became part proprietor of that journal. In 1890 he defeated Mr George Beetham, the sitting member for Masterton, and represented this constituency until 1911, when he was defeated by Mr G. R. Sykes on the second ballot. For a period, Mr Hogg was Minister of Lands in the Ward Cabinet, but resigned following on differences on currency questions. During his term as a member of Parliament Mr Hogg did much to promote settlement in various parts of the district and rendered useful service on the Wellington Land Board and Education Board. In all these duties he was ably supported by his wife, who took a keen interest and active part in everything associated with the district’s advancement. She was an active worker on innumerable committees and always found time to give a helping hand to those, in .need. .... _ •' . ■ . The late Mrs Hogg was predeceased by her husband in 1920 and by two sons, Messrs William and Stanley Hogg, and one daughter, Mrs Nellie Wainwright, of Rongotea. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs A. Cohen and Misses Jessie and Fay Hogg, all of Masterton, besides six grandchildren.

The funeral will take place tomorrow (Thursday); leaving the residence at 3. p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.
