MOTOR TAXATION

SYSTEM OF ALLOCATION AT FAULT. OPINION OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. “That the league be informed that in the opinion of this council the whole system of the allocation of motor taxation should be revised." The foregoing was a resolution passed by the Masterton Borough Council at its meeting last night in reply to a letter from the Canterbury Progress League urging on the Government the need for devoting the whole of the proceeds of motor taxation to roading purposes. “Sight appears to be lost by all these people,” added Mr Jordan, “that last year the Public Works Department subsidised roading works in rural areas to the tune of 11 millions. The Government takes about Iff millions for’ the Consolidated Fund and the Public Works Department hands out 11 millions, which amount to a net steal of half a million. That fact always seems to be overlooked, which was not fair to the Government.”
