TE WHARAU
GOLF COMPETITIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The first qualifying round for the championship was played on Saturday last. The day being perfect, those present had an enjoyable time, and good cards were handed in, which necessitated an alteration in the handicaps. Owing to the postponement of several playing days on account of the wet weather, the club will be unable to play the finals of the championship until the end of the first week of next month, in place of having the finals completed by the end of August as previously arranged. On Saturday last Mrs Schofield and Miss Bannister halved in a Kummerstein Cup match, and S. Gray defeated H. Paku in a similar match for the Nimmo Cup. On Saturday Mrs Schofield will meet Mrs Nitz and S. Gray will play M. Paku.
The following is the draw for the second qualifying round and the third round for W. Kummer’s trophies: Men: Gray v. M. Paku; N. Foreman v. H. Paku; W. Kummer v. A. McGregor; P. Kummer v. R. McKinstry; F. McKinstry v. I. McGregor; N. Kummer v. R. Vennell; H. Winter v. J. Bannister; E. Nitz v. F. Cotter. Ladies: Mrs Schofield v. Mrs Nitz; Mrs Foreman v. Miss Buckeridge; Mrs Read v. Miss M. Taylor; Mrs J. Bannister v. Miss Taylor; Mrs R. Bannister v. Mrs McKinstry; Miss Dickason v. Mrs A. McGregor; Miss Vennell v. Miss McGregor; Mrs Kummer v. Miss Bannister; Mrs I. McGregor v. Miss Schofield. Over the weekend a return match with Wainui-o-ru Club was played on the latter’s links in fine weather. The jinks were in splendid order and a very enjoyable day was spent. The visitors were again successful, winning 19 games and losing 12, 5 games being all square. Next weekend a return match will be played with a team representing the Carterton Club on the links at Taratahi. All those playing are requested to be prompt on the mark so that an early start can be made. A DAILY MAIL DESIRED. A movement is on foot here to make application to the Postmaster-General through the Masterton Post Office for a daily mail service for this district in lieu of the present service of three times a week to Te Wharau and biweekly to Lands End. A petition is being signed by all settlers and residents and a deputation will present it to the postmaster within a few days, and it is confidently expected that the application will- be gj anted.
