GREYTOWN
MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. PROCEEDS FROM MOTOR TAXATION. / (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr A. W. Horton, presided at the -monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council, held last night. Those present were: Councillors H. J. Nightingale, G. F. Eager, F. W. Wood, W. A. Tate, A. Stuart, A. Balfour, H. J. Farley, and I. Blissett. “If the 2J millions that goes into the Consolidated Fund were spent on main highways the Government would have to raise an equivalent amount by some other method of taxation,” remarked the Mayor, when referring to a letter from the Canterbury Progress League containing a resolution urging on the Government the necessity for devoting the whole of the proceeds of motor taxation to roading purposes. Councillor W. A. Tate thought they should support the 'resolution and on his motion it was decided to forward to the Prime Minister a resolution along the lines of the one contained in the league’s letter. A letter was received appealing for financial support to the Dr Ada Patterson Memorial Fund. The Mayor said they had received so many appeals for help that they did not know what to do with them. Councillor Tate said it was a matter for the general public and not for the council. It was decided to take no action in the matter.
'Mr W. J. Gates, who has been fire brigade inspector in Greytown, for many years, wrote tendering his resignation as he was leaving the town. The resignation was received with regret and it was decided to write expressing appreciation of Mr Gates’s valuable work. The Mayor was appointed to attend a meeting of local body representatives to be held this week to elect a delegate to the Wellington Centennial Exhibition executive committee. “Greytown will have to fall into line and pay its share,” remarked the Mayor, when it was decided to agree to the borough’s allocation of £45 8s towards the cost of the Wellington Provincial Court at the Centennial Exhibition. / It, was decided to ask the Housing Department to supply the council with the cost of each Government house to be erected in Greytown so that the Valuation Department could assess their rateable value. An invitation to attend a special service to be held on September 11 to celebrate the golden jubilee of the Greytown Presbyterian Church was received from the Rev K. P. Lilly and accepted. A request for financial assistance to the Spanish War Refugee Children’s fund was received, but it was decided that no action be taken other than that of placing a collection list in the borough offices. “We seem to be at a disadvantage with the Power Board in that they have their latest cookers nicely displayed and we have practically no modern gas appliances,” remarked Councillor Balfour when urging that an effort be made to have a display of the latest gas appliances. The Mayor said the financial position of the Gas department was such that it was not possible to have a big stock of appliances on hand. There was one cooker at the Gas Works at present, while the Gas Manager had authority to obtain any appliance on consignment ’’required by a consumer.' The hire purchase system could also be taken advantage of by consumers. Councillor Balfour’s suggestion was referred to the Gas Committee for consideration. MINIATURE RIFLES CLUB.
