WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
MEETING AT AL-FREDTON. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION. The August meeting of the Alfvedton Women’s Institute was held recently when Mrs Hull presided over a large gathering of ‘ members and friends who celebrated the eighth birthday of the Institute. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mrs J. D. C. Crewe. The musical programme opened with a community sing and songs were rendered by Miss Fox, Mrs J. Hartley, Mrs Clee and Mrs Bicknell and Miss Schultz contributed humorous recitations. An advertisement-guessing competition arranged by Mrs Didsbury, who also donated the prizes, was won by Mrs C. Raleigh (first) and Miss Schultz (second). Dainty shoulder sprays were presented to the visitors. The two-tiered birthday cake was made by Mrs Seymour and artistically iced by Mrs Dickens. Mrs Schermann, secretary of the Eketahuna Women’s Institute, lit the eight candles, and conveyed greetings from that Institute. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Seymour, Mrs Parsonson, Mrs O. Payne and Mrs Low. The singing of the National Anthem brought the very pleasant function to a close.
GATHERING AT EKETAHUNA. There was only a small attendance of members at the August meeting of the Eketahuna Women’s Institute. Mrs Albretchtsen (vice-president) in the absence of Mrs Carter, president (owing to illness), welcomed those present. Mrs Fraser and Miss Hooper were the pianists for the afternoon. Members stood in silence in memory of Mrs Wilson and Mrs Crewe, who had died since the last monthly meeting. The secretary gave a detailed report of the Dominion Conference held in Wellington in July. Mrs Fraser moved a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker and this was carried by acclamation. Mrs Macky, M.A., gave an address on eels. This talk was very interesting and members learned much that they did not know previously about the eel. Mrs Albrechtsen moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Macky, this being carried by acclamation. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Fauvel, Fox and Oliver. The competitions for the afternoon were won as follow: —Baby’s singlet (to be sent to an orphanage), Mrs Boyes 1, Mrs Fraser and Miss Mitchell, equal, 2; Mrs L. Burling 3. There were 18 entries. Posy: Mrs Oliver 1, Mrs Fraser 2 and 3.
