FAT STOCK SHORTAGE
PRICES MAY INCREASE (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 12. A growing shortage of fat stock and increased overhead costs may result in an increase in the price of some lines of meat in Auckland. Meat sold in Dunedin has already advanced by an average of Id a lb, and although no action has yet been taken by Auckland retailers, it is feared that if the firming tendency for beef continues, a slight rise in price will be inevitable. A considerable shortage of prime cattle is feared by Auckland butchers within the next few months, according to a statement by Mr H., C. Bridges, president of the Auckland Master Butchers’ Association. No increases in price were planned for the present, and although the market has firmed considerably at the last Westfield sale, it had not yet reached a stage where advances in cost would have to be passed on. Mr Bridges added that supplies of sheep were coming in fairly regularly, and he did not expect a rise in the price of mutton.
